The demise of the Lehigh Valley Outdoor Expo, which was originally scheduled to run last weekend but was canceled unexpectedly before it could make its 32nd annual run, appears to be the seed of a new show, right here in northern Berks County.

Weaknecht Archery in Kutztown is teaming up with Bob's Wildlife Taxidermy in Orefield, to stage the Lehigh Valley Hunting and Fishing Extravaganza Friday through Sunday, June23-25, in at the Kempton Community Center, Berks County.

Summer typically has been a deadly season for outdoor shows.

Even the king of the shows - the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show held each February at the State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg - couldn't make it happen.

Organizers of that show about a decade ago attempted a scealed-down summer show, but attracted attendance so low that the idea dropped almost before that first one had ended.

However, Weaknecht's has been running its successful Bow Fair each July for several years and has the contacts in the industry to give this new show in Kempton a good shot at succeeding.

The timing of the new show should have no impact on the Hamburg Hunting & Fishing Expo, which showed new signs of life and future promise in February.

Northern Berks could find itself in the enviable position of being the only spot in Pennsylvania to host two outdoor shows each year.

Now it's up to local businesses and organizations to take advantage of the opportunity and sign up for booths at the shows.

Weaknecht' s and Bob' s intend for the summer show to be a user-friendly weekend for everyone.

Fees for vendors and patrons will be very modest, along with clubs and organizations being free, but with the condition that their displays not only promote them but the sport.

The Kempton Community Center offers considerable outdoor areas where various activities not normally included in the winter shows migh be scheduled during a show in June.
