The Lehigh Valley Hunting and Fishing Extravaganza will be held in June.

Up for some deer dragging? Since the Allentown Sportsman Show closed about three years ago, many sports men and women in the Lehigh Valley looked for another venue to meet and greet while competing in outdoors events, including, yes, deer dragging.Enter The Second Annual Lehigh Valley Hunting and Fishing Extravaganza.

The event, which offers activities and attractions for hunters, fishers and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages includes activities in the archery, fishing, marksmanship, trapping, primitive firearms among others. Vendors will also be on hand to sell their wares.

Co-Show Director Bob V Danenhower Sr. said the Allentown event was a place for many outdoorsmen clubs to get together and also attract new members.

"Many of the sportsmen groups used the event as a way to meet new people and to get the kids involved," Danehower, of Orefield, said. "And when that event closed down, we needed to focus on another event because it was very important to us."

The Hunting and Fishing Extravaganza will take place June 22 through 24 at the Kempton Fairgrounds in Kempton, Pa.

Danehower said those interested in outdoor activities from throughout the Lehigh Valley, including surrounding areas, are encouraged to attend.

One of the main attractions of the event last year will continue this year.

The Mr. Lehigh Valley Outdoorsmen Competition includes numerous events for men and women with the overall winner being named Mr. or Ms. Lehigh Valley Outdoorsmen Of The Year.

"The event is special because it brings in everyone who takes a lot of time honing their skills throughout the year into a fun competition," Danehower said.

Participants in the competition compete in numerous events, including archery, log chopping, tomahawk throwing, clay shooting and deer dragging.

While not dragging actual shot deer, the event includes sandbags that simulate the weight of a deer shot in the woods which competitors must carry over a certain distance in allotted time.

"All the events, while serious on some levels, are fun for everyone involved and bring us all together," Danehower said."It's important to note that we also want women to compete. Some of the women beat out the men last year."

The overall event also includes children's, Boys and Girl scouts events, seminars and vendors.

"We're really looking to grow this year," Daneworth said.
