Outdoors for 5-25-06 by Nick Hromiak
Since our March 15 column on the Lehigh Valley Hunting and Fishing Extravaganza,
the three day show, scheduled for June 23, 24, 25 at Kempton Fairgrounds, has
added a host of added attractions for show-goers.
Topping the list is a Mr/Mrs/Ms Lehigh Valley Outdoorsman Competition which
should really be titled Outdoors Person since all genders are invited to
compete. The event will include 22 small bore shooting, bow shooting, rod
casting, black powder shooting, deer dragging, tomahawk throwing, tree stand
climbing, log chopping and outdoor knowledge. The event is being organized by
Jen Rapchak of Coplay and her fiancé Matt Bendar of Whitehall. Bendar is a
lifelong hunter, trapper, fisherman and more recently, big game hunting guide in
Colorado. He has taken many trophy deer and four Pennsylvania black bear.
Rapchak, was raised on a Bradford County dairy farm and knows the meaning of
work and of course, how to milk a cow. She was a member of her local sportsmen's
club through high school and has been a licensed hunter for five years. Her
hobbies include raising horses, riding, hunting, camping and hiking.
Pre-registration is necessary for this Saturday event and can be done via email
(jenniekrischke@yahoo.com) or regular mail (MLVO Competition, 4642 Kernsville
Road, Orefield, PA 18069). For more information check the events' website at
http://lvhfe.com or call Bob Dannenhower, the
shows co-organizer, at 610-398-7609.
Trophies will be presented to first, second and third place finishers in the
men's and women's divisions. And of course, first place winners have the
bragging rights of being Mr or Mrs. or Ms Lehigh Valley Outdoorsman.
Other new additions are aimed at scouts, be it boy or girl. The Lehigh Valley
Chapter of Safari Club International will award two $250 prizes (boy and girl)
to the Top Gun Award winner's Troop for posting their best Lazer Shot score
during a computer-aided shooting competition.
Another new show highlight is an Outdoorsmen's Flea Market wherein each
marketeer will receive a 10x22 foot space to set up their used wares/gear be it
hunting, fishing, camping, military or scouting. Pre-registration is also
required online or by calling Dannenhower.
Since most sportsmen use some form of a truck to pursue their outdoor delights,
Rothrock Motors, the shows major sponsor, has managed to get the Ruger Dodge Ram
concept pickup for the show. This specially outfitted sportsmen's pickup was
designed by Ruger Arms and Dodge Trucks and features unique storage drawers and
packaging for the shooter.
More show information will be forthcoming as the show dates near.
